Safety & Health Committee
Training

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, workplaces with 40 or more employees must establish a Safety and Health Committee with both management and employee representation. This programme equips appointed members and supporting staff to run that committee properly — from formation through to meetings, incident investigation and HIRARC. Sourced through Prime Orator's compliance training network and typically delivered as a 1-day, on-site session.

Why It Matters

A Compliant Committee Is a Legal Requirement, Not a Nice-to-Have

A Statutory Requirement at 40+ Staff

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, workplaces with 40 or more employees must establish a Safety and Health Committee.

Management and Employees, Together

OSHA requires the committee to include both management and employee representatives — it is not a management-only body.

Broader Scope Since the 2022 Amendment

The OSH (Amendment) Act 2022 broadened OSHA to virtually all workplaces, bringing many more employers with 40+ staff into scope for the first time.

A Working Body, Not a Formality

A properly functioning committee runs real meetings, investigates incidents and applies HIRARC — it isn't just a name on an org chart.

WHERE THIS OBLIGATION FITS

Committee vs Coordinator

The Safety and Health Committee sits alongside — but is a distinct requirement from — the OSH Coordinator role required at smaller headcounts. This programme focuses on the committee; we cover OSH Coordinator training separately.

01

40+ Employees: Full Committee

Once headcount reaches 40, OSHA requires a formal Safety and Health Committee with management and employee representation.

02

5+ Employees: OSH Coordinator

Below that threshold, a distinct requirement applies instead — an appointed OSH Coordinator. The two roles are separate obligations, not interchangeable.

03

Post-2022 Amendment Reach

OSHA's scope now extends well beyond the originally gazetted industries, so many more organisations are newly in scope for this obligation.

04

Composition & Powers

The committee's formation, composition and functions are set out under OSHA — this programme walks through what that means in practice.
